Internships at Hogan

Continuous improvement is a core tenet for the Hogan Data Science (DS) team. Our Kaizen philosophy rests on trying to improve the world around us – from enhancing the user experience of our assessments to building the science that drives their predictive power. To make this happen, we must find talented researchers to help us move the needle forward. Hogan’s DS internship program is founded on the principles of continuous self-improvement and learning on the job. Graduate students have traveled from around the world to come work at Hogan and learn more about the science behind personality assessments. They leave the internship with real-world skills and get to apply this knowledge as they start their careers within a variety of industry, government, and academic sectors.

Why Intern at Hogan?

The DS internship program accepts interns for placement in the fall, spring, and summer terms. Hogan DS interns receive one-on-one mentoring with full time employees from one of our three teams (Talent Analytics, Product Innovation, or Knowledge/Infrastructure). You and your mentor will collaborate and find work opportunities that meet your own individual research interests. These may include independent research projects with the intent for publication or submission to conferences like SIOP or ATP. In addition, DS interns are certified on the Hogan assessments (HPI, HDS, & MVPI) and receive feedback debriefs on their own assessment results, which provides key insight into how the assessments work and are used in a developmental context.

Realistic Job Preview!

When applying for a DS internship, you have the opportunity to align your experience to one of our core teams. If you are interested in conducting validity studies and working with client data, then make sure to specify your interest in the Talent Analytics team. Those who lean more toward psychometrics and building machine learning algorithms, the Product Innovation team might be a good fit. Of course, if you like working with data and benchmarks, and building content from our extensive research archive – then come work with our Knowledge & Infrastructure team.

Our internship program includes several learning modules (e.g., conducting job analyses, running validity generalization studies, and interpreting Hogan profiles). Although you may come in and work on projects for Product Innovation in your first term, there will be opportunities to complete validity research modules that are self-guided and allow you to understand how work gets done on the Talent Analytics team. We strive for a holistic experience where each intern gets to build out a portfolio of applied projects from a variety of topic areas.

Here are a few work projects interns have recently completed:

  • Built an interactive Microsoft PowerBi dashboard using personality and industry data
  • Used R to automate an Equivalence Language report generation process
  • Developed a Microsoft SharePoint site to store archival research studies
  • Programmed a client success story report generator using Microsoft Power Automate
  • Streamlined our meta-analysis process using R scripts
  • Coded client focus group notes that are used in a Natural Language Processing application
  • Wrote content and blog articles showcasing client business outcomes (i.e., ROI case studies)

We value our interns and keep in touch after they leave the program. Some end up applying and working for Hogan. Others move on to other fantastic organizations. We like to collaborate on research projects while they finish up their degree program as well as when they start working in the field.
