VF Corporation, a global apparel and footwear company, partnered with Hogan to improve its selection process for leaders. Leaders are responsible for driving the strategy of their departments, building teams that are equipped to deliver on the strategy, and facilitating collaboration across departments.

Hogan’s data science team worked with VF Corporation to develop a scientifically valid screening tool to improve the quality of VF Corporation’s leaders. Hogan identified specific competencies, characteristics, and values that predict job success. Hogan built a custom personality profile using the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), Hogan Development Survey (HDS), and Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI) that enabled VF Corporation to select higher-performing leader candidates.

Critical Behaviors Assessed by Hogan

In order to build the most accurate personality profile, Hogan’s data science team determined that the following behaviors and values had the greatest impact on job success:

  • Strengths – Initiative, communication, and learning orientation
  • Risks – Inconsistency, indecisiveness, impracticality, and independence
  • Values – Company culture, data, and stability

By incorporating the Hogan profile into the candidate assessment process, VF Corporation was able to more effectively select leader candidates with the characteristics most important for career success.

Improved Accuracy

Based on the research, VF Corporation can expect to identify the highest performers more accurately. Using the profile, 58% of high-fit leaders are rated in the top 20% of performers, compared to only 36% of low-fit leaders.
